Burnout rarely happens overnight.
It doesn’t suddenly appear one morning when you wake up unable to continue. More often, it develops quietly over months or even years, hidden beneath achievement, responsibility, and the constant drive to keep going.
I know this because I lived it.
For a long time, I was trying to meet everyone’s expectations, including my own—but mostly everyone else’s.
I wanted to perform well at work. I wanted to be dependable. I wanted to prove that I could handle everything that came my way.
At first, I was simply trying to keep up with the pace around me.
But over time, something shifted.
I wasn’t just keeping up anymore.
I was pushing myself to go faster and faster.
I wanted to prove that I could do it all. That I was strong enough. Capable enough. Productive enough.
The problem was that no matter how much I accomplished, it never felt like enough.
Looking back, I can see that I wasn’t measuring my pace according to my own needs anymore. I was measuring it against external expectations and an outdated version of myself that believed worthiness came through achievement.
That mindset slowly led me toward overwhelm, chronic stress, and emotional exhaustion.
If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone.
And the good news is that there is a way back.
What Is Burnout Really?
Burnout is more than feeling tired after a busy week.
It is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress and the feeling that your resources are no longer sufficient to meet the demands placed upon you.
Many people experiencing burnout describe feeling:
- Constantly exhausted, even after resting
- Overwhelmed by tasks that once felt manageable
- Emotionally drained
- Disconnected from their work or personal life
- Unable to focus or make decisions
- Irritable, anxious, or unmotivated
- Trapped in a cycle of doing without truly living
One of the most challenging aspects of burnout is that highly capable people often don’t recognize it until they are already deeply affected.
Because they have always been the ones who “handle everything.”
The ones who keep going.
The ones others rely on.
Until one day, the body and mind begin sending signals that can no longer be ignored.
Why Traditional Burnout Recovery Often Falls Short
When people think about the treatment of burnout, they often imagine taking a holiday, reducing their workload, or getting more sleep.
While these actions can certainly help, they rarely address the deeper causes.
Many people return from vacation feeling refreshed for a few days, only to find themselves back in the same cycle shortly afterward.
Why?
Because burnout is not only about what you do.
It is also about how you relate to yourself.
Many burnout patterns are rooted in:
- Perfectionism
- People-pleasing
- Fear of failure
- Difficulty setting boundaries
- Constant self-pressure
- Believing your value depends on your productivity
- Ignoring your emotional and physical needs
Unless these patterns are addressed, the cycle often repeats itself.
True treatment of burnout requires more than temporary relief.
It requires transformation.
The Moment Everything Changed for Me
For a long time, I thought I simply needed to become more efficient.
Better organised.
More productive.
More disciplined.
But eventually, I realised that the problem wasn’t my schedule.
The problem was that I had lost connection with myself.
I had become so focused on external expectations that I stopped listening to my own inner guidance.
I wasn’t asking what I needed.
I wasn’t asking what felt aligned.
I wasn’t paying attention to my body’s signals.
I had lost touch with my natural rhythm.
The turning point came when I began learning how to reconnect with myself again.
Not through doing more.
But through slowing down enough to listen.
Reconnecting with Your Inner Rhythm
One of the most powerful aspects of burnout recovery is rediscovering your own pace.
Every person has a unique rhythm.
A natural flow that supports both wellbeing and productivity.
When we constantly override that rhythm in pursuit of external goals, stress accumulates.
Eventually, the nervous system remains stuck in survival mode.
Many of my clients tell me they no longer know what they truly want because they have spent years responding to everyone else’s needs.
Reconnecting with your inner rhythm means learning to ask:
- What genuinely matters to me?
- Where am I giving away too much energy?
- What needs to change?
- What am I trying to prove?
- What would happen if I allowed myself to slow down?
These questions can be uncomfortable.
But they often become the doorway to profound healing.
Transformational Life Coaching as a Treatment of Burnout
As a Transformational Life Coach, I have worked with many individuals who initially believed their burnout was caused solely by work.
Yet as we explored deeper, a different picture emerged.
Burnout is often connected to long-standing patterns that have developed over years or even decades.
Patterns such as:
- Seeking validation through achievement
- Feeling responsible for everyone else’s wellbeing
- Struggling to say no
- Ignoring personal needs
- Constantly putting others first
Transformational coaching helps uncover these unconscious patterns and create new ways of thinking, feeling, and responding.
Rather than simply managing symptoms, we work on the root causes.
Clients often experience greater self-awareness, stronger boundaries, increased confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Most importantly, they begin creating a life that feels aligned rather than exhausting.
How Autogenic Training Supports Burnout Recovery
Another powerful approach I use in the treatment of burnout is Autogenic Training.
As an Autogenic Training Therapist, I have seen first-hand how effective this method can be in helping people regulate stress and restore balance.
Autogenic Training is a structured relaxation technique that helps calm the nervous system and activate the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
When we experience chronic stress, the body often remains in a state of fight, flight, or freeze.
This state may become so familiar that many people no longer recognise how tense and overwhelmed they actually feel.
Through regular practice, Autogenic Training can help:
- Reduce stress levels
- Improve sleep quality
- Enhance emotional resilience
- Support concentration and focus
- Promote physical relaxation
- Create a greater sense of inner calm
Many clients describe it as finally discovering an internal “reset button.”
A way to return to themselves amidst the noise and demands of daily life.
Supporting Emotional Wellbeing with doTERRA Essential Oils
Alongside coaching and relaxation techniques, I also enjoy incorporating doTERRA essential oils as part of a holistic wellbeing approach.
While essential oils are not a standalone treatment for burnout, they can beautifully support emotional balance, relaxation, and self-care rituals.
Some of my favourite oils and blends for stress support include:
Serenity
Known for its calming properties, Lavender is often used to support relaxation and restful sleep.
Adaptiv™
Designed to support emotional wellbeing during times of stress, uncertainty, and change.
Balance®
A grounding blend that many people find helpful when feeling overwhelmed or emotionally scattered.
Combined with coaching, mindfulness, and Autogenic Training, these oils can become part of a supportive daily routine that nurtures both body and mind.
Burnout Recovery Is Not About Becoming Someone New
One of the greatest misconceptions about healing is the belief that we need to become a different person.
In reality, recovery is often about returning to who we truly are beneath the pressure, expectations, and survival strategies.
The treatment of burnout is not about fixing yourself.
It is about reconnecting with yourself.
It is about remembering that your worth is not measured by your productivity.
That rest is not something you must earn.
That slowing down is not failure.
And that a balanced, fulfilling life is possible.
When you reconnect with your inner rhythm, you begin making choices from clarity rather than pressure.
From alignment rather than fear.
From self-respect rather than self-sacrifice.
And that changes everything.
